Remembering Professor Jorge Manzanares Robles – an Outstanding Scientist and Friend of Our Institute

We received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Professor Jorge Manzanares Robles – an outstanding pharmacologist who gained international recognition for his research in the field of neuropsychopharmacology.

Professor Manzanares graduated in Pharmacy from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1985 and obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmacology) in 1987. In the early stages of his career, he conducted research at Ramón y Cajal Hospital and La Paz Hospital in Madrid, and between 1988 and 1993 he worked as a Research Associate at Michigan State University (USA). After returning to Spain, he continued his scientific career at leading research institutions, including the Complutense University of Madrid, the Ramón y Cajal Institute of Neurobiology (CSIC), and the 12 de Octubre Hospital.

In 2004, he was appointed Professor of Pharmacology at Miguel Hernández University in Alicante (UMH), where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and headed the Translational Neuropsychopharmacology Laboratory at the Institute of Neuroscience in Alicante (UMH-CSIC).

Professor Manzanares was a highly respected member of the international scientific community. He authored more than 200 scientific publications, achieving an h-index of 48 and over 6,700 citations. He led more than 50 research projects and delivered over 300 invited lectures worldwide. His research made a significant contribution to the understanding of the etiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.

For our academic community, the opportunity to collaborate with Professor Manzanares was a great honour. His last visit to our Institute during the Twinning TREPSY Winter School 2026 (12–13 February 2026), entitled “Therapeutic Potential of Cannabidiol in Neuropsychopharmacology,” will remain in our memory as an inspiring meeting with an outstanding scientist and an extraordinary person.

Professor Jorge Manzanares will remain in our memory as an outstanding scientist and mentor whose scientific achievements significantly contributed to the development of neuropsychopharmacology.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Professor’s family, friends, and colleagues.
